World Day Against Child Labour

June 12th is recognized all over the world as World Day against Child Labour. It was first launched in 2002 and it aimed to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour, Child labour is a problem of immense global proportions and statistics showed that it was absolutely necessary to strengthen existing conventions on child labour. The dangers that a child is exposed to includes:

•          Dangerous environment: Children risk death or injury from tunnel collapses, accidental explosions or rock falls in places such as mine.

•          Industries: Children could be exposed to toxic substances which could lead to extreme chronic health conditions.

•          Agricultural works: Children might have to handle dangerous tools and equipment that might cause them without proper protection

•          Weather Conditions: Children are exposed to extreme weather conditions and might be forced to work without shoes or adequate clothing.

•          Unsanitary Conditions: The children might be susceptible to working in poorly lit and poorly ventilated places.

All the above mentioned environments and areas puts the children at risk of catching illnesses and diseases, not to mention they interfere with a child’s education as most of them would have neither the time, nor the energy, to attend school. Therefore let us not deny another child things that we have thought to be given granted for us.
