Pulse Oximeter: Essential Things to Know

You may have noticed that the government has said that it will control the price of Pulse Oximeter. Many factors determine whether a person needs to come to the hospital, give oxygen, or need more medication, depending on whether the oxygen level in the body is declining as well as physical difficulties. This is where every patient needs to be aware of the use of the pulse oximeter. Let's see how these two tools work.

Pulse Oximeter
It is a device that can easily and quickly detect the amount of dissolved oxygen in the blood. Hemoglobin carries oxygen in the blood. Oxygen-deficient hemoglobin is called deoxygenated hemoglobin and oxygen dissolved is called oxygenated hemoglobin.

The main components are a red LED with a wavelength of 660 nm (nanometers), an infrared LED with a wavelength of 940 nm, a photodiode and a digital screen.

When the oximeter probe is inserted into the finger and turned on, red and infrared rays travel through the blood. Oxygenated hemoglobin and deoxygenated hemoglobin in the blood absorb rays at different rates. Oxygenated hemoglobin absorbs more infrared rays and transmits more red light. The opposite is true for deoxygenated hemoglobin. The red and infrared rays emitted in this way fall on the photodiode. These are analyzed to determine the level of oxygen in the blood. It is said in percent. The normal oxygen level is 95-100%. If it is less than 95, seek medical help. Hypoxemia is a condition in which the level of oxygen in the blood decreases. The operation of pulse oximeters is based on Beer- Lambert's law.

Beer- Lambert's law.

When light (radiation) passes through an object, the amount of light that the material absorbs is proportional to the intensity of the material and the distance light travels through the material. That is, as the intensity of matter and the distance light travels, the rate of absorption increases or the rate of transmitted light decreases.
