Why We Have Brain Freezes

Everyone at some point in their life must have had a sudden jolting pain in your brain when gouging down quickly on cold desserts. We commonly call this ‘Brain Freeze’. People often compensate by holding their head in hopes that it would warm it back. We feel so because we ate the cold cuisine quickly and it has decreased the average temperature of the brain, which in fact is not true. What happens is that the brain wants to keep a constant temperature and its thermostat is the upper pallet of the mouth and when the temperature within the mouth falls our brain feels that we are trapped in some extremely cold place and hence opens up arteries to pump more blood to the area to warm it up, but instead of making you super smart, the increased blood pressure just causes an headache. Sometimes pressing your tongue against the top of your mouth can help escape from the pain. This discovery was founded by the joint association of the researchers at Harvard, the University of Ireland, and the U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs.
