Why do we Itch

An itch is a general sensation arising from the irritation of skin cells or nerve cells associated with the skin. It arises due to stimulation of pruriceptors—itch-sensing nerve endings—by mechanical, thermal or chemical mediators. While most of us perceive itch as a nuisance, it serves as an important sensory and self-protective mechanism. It developed after years of evolution to keep us focused during our outdoor hunting escapades. It alerts us to any harmful external agents. While scratching and rubbing the sensation stimulates various pain and touch receptors in the area, which offers temporary relief but in excess it could lead to possible tear which could result in an infection. Despite approximately a century of itch research, there is no single effective treatment, but several topical and orally-administered agents are available that suppress itching in certain clinical settings
