What 'Shaking A Leg' Really Means

We all may have a friend or a family member who has a habit of shaking one’s leg during a conversation. I did a bit of research myself and it turns out there is two reasons for that and it even has a positive side to it.

If you have a habit of shaking your leg during any meetings or seminars or simply while sitting down it is a sign of ‘restlessness’ and you should probably calm down and take few deep breaths, decreasing your caffeine intake is also advised.

If your leg shaking is while conversing with someone then it’s because you find the conversation rather boring and believe it or not shaking your leg will prevent yourself from yawning in front of them.

The advantage I talked about earlier is not regarding the yawning but without going technical and using these biological terms let me explain - the part of the brain that controls the motor functions such as walking and ‘shaking’ your leg’ is very close to the part of the brain that assists in our cognitive functions. This is why people tend to walk while trying to come up with a solution to a problem they have stumbled upon. While thinking hard you automatically have the urge to get up and walk and similarly when you stimulate your motor functions ‘thinking’ side of the brain is coming up with new and new ideas.
