Typhoid

Typhoid is among the most common diseases in India. It is caused by the bacteria – Salmonella typhimurium. This bacteria lives within the host cell and makes itself safe from the body’s immune system. It cannot be spread by any other animal. It is purely human-human transmission. It is spread through human feces. The bacteria live in the intestine and slowly spread to the bloodstream. It is most common in areas where there is no clean water and the infected human feces get mixed with the contaminated water. The bacteria enter through the mouth and spend 1-3 weeks in the intestine. If left untreated in 4 cases can lead to death but with the right care and medication only 4 in 100 cases are fatal. The main symptoms of typhoid are severe fever and rash. These symptoms are usually visible from the 1st week of infection itself. There are both oral as well as shot vaccines for typhoid but are not recommended for children below the age of 6. The only real treatment for thyroid is antibiotics and in exceptional severe cases surgery may be required if the bowel has become perforated.
