The Process of Medical Tourism

Seeking medical treatment in a foreign country by patients leads to the influx of medical tourism. However, there are multiple processes involved in the medical tourism sector. Firstly, the person seeking medical treatment abroad should contact a medical tourism provider. The provider will generally ask the patient to provide a medical report, which would include the nature of ailment, local doctor’s opinion, medical history, diagnosis and may also ask for additional information. Certified medical doctors or consultants then provide advice on the medical treatment. The aggregate expenditure, the choice of hospitals, tourist destinations, the duration of stay and many such things are discussed. After the consent bonds and agreements are signed, the patient is provided with recommendation letters for a medical visa, which then has to be procured from the concerned embassy. When the patient travels to the destination country, the medical tourism provider assigns a case executive, who takes care of the patient’s accommodation, treatment and other forms of care. Once the treatment is completed, the patient can stay in the tourist destination or return home.

The above-mentioned facts add to the increasing influx of tourists who aim for medical tourism in Kerala, where one of the first steps to be implemented is the use of medical disposables like probe covers into the health care system.
