The Misconceptions of Cholesterol

The word cholesterol has been so glorified in a bad sense that the first image that comes to your mind is an obese individual when in fact, cholesterol is a liquid that is present in the cell membrane of all the body cells. It is used for the synthesis of hormones, cell regeneration and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. It is a vital nutrient that is necessary for the production of testosterone, progesterone and other hormones related to the endocrine functionalities. There are mainly two different types of cholesterols:

• Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDL)

• High-Density Lipoproteins (HDL)

In a biological sense, the function of LDL is to transport cholesterol that the liver produces to the various parts of the body where it can be properly used. HDL transports the used cholesterol back to the liver so that it can be properly excreted from the body as bile.

The proficient understanding of the above-mentioned facts add to the increasing influx of tourists that aim for medical tourism in Kerala and one of the very first steps that need to be implemented is the use of medical disposables such as probe covers into the general system of health care
