Self mutilation

Self mutilation is the act of deliberately injuring one's body. Often termed as self harming, self injury, self inflicted violence is a recognised psychiatric disorder. This disorder however does not attempt to take one's life but can cause serious medical consequences.

Causes

There are a variety of reasons that could cause self-mutilation such as:
1. Depression
2. Anorexia
3. Nervosa
4. Eating disorders
Among many. While self harming can bring about a momentary release of tension it is usually followed by a tremendous amount of guilt, shame and other painful emotions. The different emotions that mix together to trigger self-mutilation is complex but one can narrow it down and say it is the inability to cope with deep psychological pain in healthy ways. 

Effects

Self harming is mostly an impulsive act. But there are evidence to show that it is planned and in a methodical manner. It is usually a repetitive behaviour and in most cases the subject hides it very cleanly show identification of this disorder is a herculean task. 

The most common forms of self harm include:

1. Cutting
2. Burning
3. Overdosing
4. Hitting and punching
5. Headbanging
6. Pulling out hair
7. Interfering with wound healing

There is no age restriction no is it biased buy gender  by any means.
