Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a caused by a relatively rate bacterial infection – leptospira. The disease is equally common in animals as well as humans. It can pass from animals to humans via drinking contaminated water, unhealed cuts or wounds, through eyes, nose or mouth or by mucous membrane. The animals most common in transmitting the disease include rats, foxes, skunks and raccoons. There are mainly two types of leptospirosis:

  • Mild leptospirosis whose symptoms include muscle pain, chills and headache
  • Severe leptospirosis which can progress to organ failure, internal hemorrhaging and ultimately death.

The most common symptoms can be seen within 2 weeks of infection and they include

  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • High Fever
  • Nausea
  • Diarhea

In most cases the victim recovers without treatment but if not cared the risk of it being a severe leptospirosis is high. For mild leptospirosis antibiotics such as penicillin or tetracycline would suffice, but for severe leptospirosis appropriate treatments needs to be registered.
