Ill Effects of Nail Biting

Nail biting, or onychophagia is a very common habit among all age group. What most people fail to realize are the ill effects of this which includes

•          Bacteria: Bacteria thrives under your nails and as you bite it, they get transferred to your mouth and it could lead to infections.

•          Nail Infections: As one bites, there is a chance of paronychia, a skin infection that occurs around your nails where microorganisms can enter through tiny tears or abrasions, leading to swelling, redness, and pus around your nail.

•          Warts: Chronic nail biters are more susceptible to warts being formed due to HPV; these can also very quickly spread to your mouth and lips.

•          Dental Issues: One might not believe this but constant nail biting can interfere with your natural placement of teeth and your teeth could slowly but surely shift out of position.

•          Social Awkwardness: Biting one’s nail is indeed a social awkwardness and people are aware of this fact except that they accidently do the same when in public.

•          Mentally disturbed: In 2012, the American Psychiatric Association decided to re-classify nail biting as a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), along with other forms of "pathological grooming."
