Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive sweating. The sweating can affect just one specific area (Focal hyperhidrosis) or the whole body (Generalized hyperhidrosis). There are basically two types of Hyperhidrosis which are

•          Primary idiopathic hyperhidrosis

•          Secondary hyperhidrosis

Causes of Primary idiopathic hyperhidrosis are not well-known while the causes of secondary hyperhidrosis include

o          Spinal cord injury

o          Alcohol abuse

o          Anxiety

o          Diabetes

o          Gout

o          Heart disease

o          Hyperthyroidism –

o          Obesity

o          Parkinson's disease

o          Pregnancy

o          Respiratory failure

o          Shingles

o          Some cancers, such as Hodgkin's disease

o          Some infections - HIV, malaria, TB (tuberculosis)

o          Certain medications

o          Substance abuse

Treatment of hyperhidrosis include the following means

  • Antiperspirants
  • Armpit shields
  • Clothing styles
  • Shoes (synthetic recommended)
  • Socks

Medical treatments for hyperhidrosis include:

  • Iontophoresis – The process by which a painless electric current is passed through the hands and feet which are submerged in a bowl of water for a period of 20-30 minutes.
  • Botulinum toxin – A Botox injections that blocks the nerves that trigger the sweat glands.
  • Anticholinergic drugs - These medications inhibit the transmission of parasympathetic nerve impulses and prevent hyperhidrosis.
  • ETS (Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy) – In this method the nerves that carry messages to the sweat glands are cut.
