Hiccups

Hiccups are sudden, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle where the vocal cords snap shut during these muscle spasms thereby producing the hiccup sound. Even though hiccups could arise from nothing, its most common causes include:

  • Eating too quickly
  • Eating too much or drinking too much
  • Any disease or disorder that irritates the nerves that control the diaphragm
  • Abdominal surgery
  • Strokes or brain tumors involving the brain stem, and some chronic medical disorders
  • Noxious fumes can also trigger hiccups.
  • Sudden changes in temperature
  • Fear or excitement

Even though hiccups are but minor nuisances they can still be extremely irritating at times. They are most often rhythmic and disappear soon enough although the longest recorded hiccup attack is six decades. Hiccups can occur in both man and woman and can even occur in a fetus while still in utero.
