Foam to Repair and Grow Bone

Introduction

French scientist Pierre Weiss, from the University of Nantes has led a team that developed the prototype Calcium phosphate cements (CPC) that not only repair bone damage but also allows bone formation.

The Process

The team made use of two syringes, One contains monosodium phosphate and the other one has silanized-hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. Both these syringes are inserted at the same time to create a hydrogel foam to create larger pores. This foaming agent creates air bubbles in the CPC mixture which is both self-setting and macroporous. The CPC mixture thus created from mixing the new foam with the CPC paste provides an excellent cohesion and is extremely necessary for cavities larger than 50 nanometers.

The Result

In one week, the foam has completely filled the bone defects and in 6 weeks the foam had created a scaffold to form new bones.

The proficient understanding of the above-mentioned facts add to the increasing influx of tourists that aim for medical tourism in Kerala and one of the very first steps that need to be implemented is the use of medical disposables such as probe covers into the general system of health care.
