Dehydration Headache

Our body requires the proper balance of fluid and electrolytes to function properly. A dehydration headache is caused by not having enough fluid in the body. Every day, the body loses water through several daily activities and this fluid lost is easily balanced through drinking or eating fluid-rich foods, when the body loses water faster than it can be replenished it can temporarily cause the brain to shrink thereby pulling it away from the skull causing pain which is what we call a dehydration headache.

Symptoms

•          Extreme Thirst

•          Reduced Urination

•          Confusion

•          Fatigue

•          Low Blood Pressure

•          Increased Heart Rate

 

Causes

 Just like the name, dehydration headaches are caused only when a person is dehydrated. The fundamental causes include:

•          Diarrhea

•          Vomiting

•          Fever

•          Excess Urination

 

Risk Factors

People at higher risk of dehydration include:

•          People Who Live In Higher Altitudes

•          Infants and Young Children

•          Elderly People

•          People with Chronic Illnesses, Such As Diabetes and Kidney Disease

•          People Who Take Medications That Increase Urine Output

•          Endurance Athletes

•          People Who Live In Hot Climates

 

Prevention

•          Drink enough fluid

•          Eat fluid-rich foods

•          Avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol

•          Reduce strenuous activity during heat or if feeling unwell
