Chewing gums are now available in all flavours, shapes and sizes. It is a very common habit to pick up and in today's edition let us check the pros and cons of chewing gum.

  • Pros

It improves cognitive performance. Studies have shown that people who chew gum while practising a skill or studying a particular topic can recreate the same during a performance or an exam if they are chewing gum. Research also shows that sugar-free gum helps improve dental health and the prolonged use of saliva in the mouth helps kill more bacteria.

  • Cons

It contains a lot of toxic ingredients and artificial chemicals that adversely affect the human body. It upsets the digestive system as well as the metabolism by tricking the body into thinking it is consuming food. Chewing gum also leads to swallowing excess air which can cause abdominal pain and bloating. The human jaws are not meant for chewing continuously for hours on end and therefore even though chewing might feel good, it causes certain muscle imbalance in the jaw.
