Benign Positional Vertigo

Benign Positional Vertigo is the most common cause of vertigo. It causes a sensation of spinning. You can experience small brief periods of dizziness. The most common actions that can Trigger a BPV are:

 

1. Lying down

2. Sudden jolting up

3. Tilting your head up and down

4. Turning over

 

Causes

 

Bpv is caused as a result of a disturbance in your inner ear. As we all know it is the fluid inside the tubes in your ear called semicircular canals that controls the balance of the entire body. These canals are extremely sensitive and any disturbance to this could cause Positional Vertigo.

 

Some studies say that it could also be inherited. Many diagnosed individuals also have multiple relatives with the same condition.

 

Other causes include

 

Osteoporosis

Diabetes

Prior head injuries

 

Symptoms

 

1. Vomiting

2. Dizziness

3. Unsteadiness

4. Loss of balance

5. Nausea

6. Blurred vision

 

Diagnosis

 

Dix hallpike maneuver is the most common test for diagnosis of BPV. Other tests include:

 

MRI

CT scan

Angiography of the head

Electroencephalogram

 

Complications

 

BPV by itself is not a very serious condition it occurs as one ages but when you develop weakness, slurred speech or vision problems it is absolutely necessary to call your doctor. One must also remember BPV can sometimes be a symptom for a more serious condition.
