Believing Your Own Lie

The story that I am about to tell you might seem a bit hard to swallow but this in fact has happened. I had a friend who was a descent liar like many of us he could tell pretty convincing lies. For as long as I could remember he would tell a lie about how he had a white Persian cat at home. He got the inspiration from ‘Stuart little’ movie and ever since then he would (for giggles) tell random strangers that we met about his very beautiful white cat and it’s crazy adventures. I am among the few people who have heard this story from its origin and would mostly play along with him whenever he comes up with the topic.

Now that you have a preface, let me tell you about the crazy part. One afternoon as we reached his home and started telling his mom to get the food ready he asked his mom “where is snow?”. I was shocked at this sentence as snow is the name he gave to his imaginary cat and apparently at one point he believed his own lie. Of course during that time I teased him till no ends but this is a syndrome. People can learn to believe their own lies after due time. The psychology is that once you create a scenario and keep perfecting it your mind can come to the conclusion that it exists. This is not any mental disorder it is just another marvel that the human brain is capable of performing.
