Ayurveda in Kerala, an overview

The oldest organized health care system in the world is Ayurveda. While the practice of Ayurveda is well established in all of India, only in Kerala it is a mainstream medicine. The whole of Kerala is dotted with numerous Ayurvedic medical colleges and hospitals. Kerala has become the preferred destination for medical tourism in India, because here one can find the largest number of Ayurveda colleges, hospitals , and practitioners compared to any other place in India.

                                Ashtangahridaya, authored by Vagbhbata, the classical text on medicine is the foundation on which most of ayurvedic treatments are based. Though initially it did not find many admirers in the rest of the country, several native families adopted its methods. Their descendants still serve the people having adopted the title of Ashtavaidyan. The most famous of the Ayurvedic treatments is the panchakarma, which involves five prolonged treatments. This treatment involves the use of rare herbs, medicated oil, milk and special diet to treat and cure all kinds of ailments, of both the body and the mind.
