ANCIENT VS MODERN MEDICINE

A comparison between ancient and modern medicine has always produced some interesting viewpoints. Here, let’s take a specific example and talk about the medicinal practices of Indian subcontinent. Ayurveda has been the backbone of conventional Indian medicine for ages. India has given birth to some of the most innovative treatment and healing practices that are still relevant in modern world. Both modern and traditional medicine aim for healing of the patient. But then what makes them different? Can one view them as individual approaches to treatment and recovery rather than simply as one advanced form of other? What is the parallel track between the two? And how can it be made beneficial to masses? These are the questions we really need to ponder on.
Herbalism
Ayurvedic medical practices heavily rely on medicinal plants and herbs. This can be traced back to India’s rich biological diversity and astounding amount of natural resources. But can a medicinal approach entirely dependant on plants prove to be sufficient? While we still have a large variety of medicinal plant species to be explored, and the potential of making drugs from them seems infinite, we still can’t blindly follow a system that solely depends on herbs. Indeed, the idea itself seems very limited for human kind. Modern medicine has its horizons open to all kinds of possibilities. It doesn’t shy away from acknowledging all kinds of contemporary technological tools and research. While we have strayed a lot from directly depending on plant based formulas and mainly because of the lack of natural resources, we may still need to incorporate herbalism in modern medicine. And this is where intense study is required.
Response time
Conventional medicine employs diagnosis to detail and often aim to heal from the roots. This contradicts with the modern approach of quick and immediate solutions. While the second method does indeed provide quick results as it promises, it has also proven many at times to cause an array of side effects. The fact that some people need to depend on such drugs for a lifetime for consistent relief is disappointing. This doesn’t mean approach of conventional medicine is best. There will be times when immediate response is crucial to treatment, and one simply can’t depend on detailed diagnosis to reach into decisions. Conventional medicine can drop its perfectionism and work under the concept of emergency, in such cases.
