Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome

 

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is the name for the symptoms that occur when a heavy drinker suddenly stops or significantly reduces their alcohol intake. The symptoms will be a combination of both the physical and the emotional.

 

Causes

When you drink alcohol daily, and over time it excites the nervous systems when you suddenly stop the body cannot adapt. For women the prescribed amount is 8 drinks per week and for men it is 15 according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

 

Symptoms

The symptoms can start showing earliest from 24 hours. It includes:

•          Anxiety

•          Nausea

•          Vomiting

•          Headache

•          An Increased Heart Rate

•          Sweating

•          Irritability

•          Confusion

•          Insomnia

•          High Blood Pressure

The treatment for alcohol withdrawal syndrome depends upon its severity. Under normal conditions one can treat AWS at home itself but if the acerbity is large enough you might need to get professional help from a medical establishment itself. The most severe type of withdrawal syndrome is known as delirium tremens (DT). Its signs and symptoms include:
