72 Hours Without Sleep

We are all aware how important sleep is. One of my guiding principles in life is “No human is more important than sleep” and this lesson has guided me all through my life, but have you ever wondered what would happen if you spent a few days without sleep. My friends and I started this as a joke and when the stakes were high we took it as a fierce competition.

After 24 hours without sleep we were more or less the same. It felt like we were a bit drunk, memory and judgment is lapsed and decrease in hand eye coordination.

After 36 hours things started spiraling down. We became very emotional, began feeling dehydrated, our response were more or less automatic and we all lost chunks of time.

After 48 hours, I was not really aware of my friends condition, I started experiencing periods of micro sleeps followed by a few seconds of disorientation. I found it extremely hard to focus and I dared not drive.

After 72 hours, even the simplest of conversation became a herculean task. All my senses were nulling and I even forgot simple words and searched for something I had in my hand.

I went 74 hours without sleep at a stretch, my friend completed 78 and won the challenge, but we decided to never do this again, for very real health reasons.
