The healthcare system of India, even though affordable and accessible to many, is still far from perfect. At the onset of covid-19, we came face to face with some of the truths pertaining our health system. The new situation raised questions regarding our stability and efficiency in the medical sector. This was also a wakeup call to the government as well as private enterprises that gave them a vague idea on how advanced and ready we should be ,had an emergency like a pandemic arises.

Our healthcare system today sure faces a lot of challenges.  While there are many, the three major issues are as follows:

1. Lack of medical professionals

Lack of human resources has always been an issue plaguing our country. While India has a surplus of graduated youth ,we are also met with an alarmingdeficiency in the number of qualified and properly trained medical staff. The dedication and work ethic of the existing staff in some places is  also a question lingering. We need more qualified and motivated medical professionals who are also dedicated to the cause. We must make sure they receive enough training prior to education and better working environment, so that they can reach their maximum potential.

2. Healthcare as a career

If not getting  enough staff is a problem, it’s even  harder for the condition of healthcare careers. Doctors and staff in many statescomplain about a lack of salary and incentives and many believe that they are not getting paid enough for their hard work.  A very short time ago, a bunch of nurses in Keralawent on about a strike for lack of fair packages in their jobs. We need good policies and measures to avoid such situations and develop a strategy to ensure our healthcare system function smoothly.

3.  Lack of amenities

Many of our government hospitals are severely lacking in proper infrastrure and even basic amenities. There is often not enoughfunds for restructuring these and one hear stories of corruption and administrative mishandling. People suffer from a poorly maintainedhospital environment. Such poor handling of medical systems can even lead to many fatal situations. Recently, the news of   mass deaths of babies in Uttar Pradesh shocked us all.

We, as a nation must take extra efforts to avoid such horrible stories in the future by working on our healthcare system till it reaches a satisfactory level.
